Becoming Registered
Built on values of respect, compassion and professionalism, the General Psychotherapy Council (GPsyC) aims to sensitively support the work of psychotherapists, and welcomes practitioners who continually strive to maintain the ethos and integrity of traditional psychotherapeutic practises.
The General Psychotherapy Council was the first psychotherapy and counselling organisation to become a member of the Institute of Regulation. Becoming a GPsyC Registered Practitioner means joining a regulatory body committed to supporting and validating advanced and experienced psychotherapy practitioners. With rigorous eligibility requirements, which include extensive supervised training and engaging in personal therapy/analysis, the GPsyC ensures that only well-qualified and competent psychotherapy practitioners can be admitted for registration.
On becoming a Registered Practitioner you will be part of an exceptional body of like-minded professionals who adhere to principles of practise that promote relevant and ethical standards in psychotherapy. And as a registered GPsyC practitioner you gain the right to use the post-nominal letters 'GPsyC', which signifies your advanced training and commitment to professional practise. Aiding and reinforcing sound psychotherapeutic practises, the GPsyC also offers access to its member-only masterclasses and guidance on professional and ethical issues.
The GPsyC's regulatory approach is independent of bureaucratic or political control, and avoids hostile and unfit legalistic practises in order to create a constructive framework by which to support both practitioners and the public. Maintaining the integrity and trustworthiness of the General Psychotherapy Council and its registered practitioners, any concerns or complaints are addressed promptly and tactfully.
It is the aim of the General Psychotherapy Council to preserve the traditions of psychotherapy by ensuring its registered members can work with conviction, authenticity and professionalism.
